What causes Snoring?

If you have been told that you snore, you probably already know that you are not sleeping as well as you need. When we sleep, the neck muscles relax, sometimes relax so much, that the upper airway (the nose and throat) partially closes and narrows too much, so that not enough air reaches the lungs.

This may be due to temporary reasons, such as tonsillitis or excess weight around the neck, or structural reasons, such as the shape of the nose or jaw, this narrowing of the airway causes a vibration in the throat, which create the sound of snoring.

Snoring not only alters the sleep of someone who sleeps by your side, but also alters your own sleep quality, something you can perceive or not. Snoring means that not enough oxygen is entering the system for the body to perform important functions.

It is likely that you are waking up at night without realizing it, this could be preventing you from getting the healthy sleep you need to lead a life full of vitality and energy.

Therefore, beyond whatever is causing your snoring, if you snore, or suspect that you snore, consider it a sign that something might not be right and consult with your doctor about some sleep studies.
